Como travel guide
Local insights, practical information & inspiration.
Como stands at the southern entrance to one of Europe’s most celebrated landscapes. The city combines a compact historic centre, elegant lakefront promenades and a long relationship with silk, design and international travel. Beyond it, the shores of Lake Como curve between wooded mountains, private villas, gardens and villages whose names have become synonymous with discreet luxury.
The city itself deserves more than a hurried arrival. Inside the old walls, the Cathedral of Como rises above streets filled with cafés, boutiques and historic buildings. Piazza Cavour opens towards the water, while the promenade leads west to the Tempio Voltiano and Villa Olmo. Above the city, Brunate provides a wider view across the lake and towards the Alpine landscape.
Renting a luxury car in Como is not about circling the waterfront in search of the most photographed view. Its value lies in linking different parts of the experience: an arrival from Milan Malpensa Airport, a hotel in Como, a private villa near Cernobbio, lunch in Tremezzo, an evening in Bellagio and perhaps a continuation towards Lugano or the Alps.
Exinoir can arrange delivery and collection at selected hotels, private villas, airports, marinas and other agreed locations. Como is within practical reach of Milan and its airports, while the Swiss border is close enough to make international itineraries possible. Cross-border travel must always be authorised in advance and may involve specific insurance, documentation, road-toll and vehicle conditions.
The western shore leads from Como towards Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Argegno, Tremezzo and Menaggio. It brings together some of the lake’s most prestigious hotels, wedding venues and historic villas. The road is beautiful but often narrow, passing through villages where buildings stand close to the carriageway. During summer weekends, short distances can require considerable time.
Bellagio occupies the point where the lake divides into its three branches and remains one of the essential destinations. It can be reached by road, but the journey is not always the quickest or most relaxing solution. Depending on the itinerary, combining a car with a passenger boat or private water taxi can create a far more elegant day. Vehicle ferries operate only between designated ferry terminals, principally around Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio.
Varenna offers a more intimate atmosphere on the eastern shore and is especially romantic in the evening. Menaggio provides useful access to the central and northern lake, while Tremezzo and Lenno bring together grand hotels, gardens and celebrated villas. Some properties are better approached by boat than by car, particularly during events or the busiest part of summer.
Lake Como is also one of Italy’s leading wedding and celebration destinations. A chauffeur-driven luxury saloon can coordinate airport transfers, hotel movements and evening events, while a convertible or grand tourer can be delivered separately for the days devoted to private exploration. For ceremonies, vehicle access and photography locations must be coordinated with the venue rather than assumed.
Spring is perhaps the most romantic season, when gardens flower and the mountains remain fresh and green. Summer brings the liveliest atmosphere, long daylight and the greatest demand for villas, boats and restaurants, but also the heaviest road traffic. Early autumn offers softer light and quieter journeys. Winter reveals a more private lake, although rain, low temperatures and possible snow on higher roads favour an all-wheel-drive vehicle.
Como can also become one stage of a wider European itinerary. Milan lies to the south; Lugano and Switzerland begin beyond the nearby border; Lake Maggiore can be incorporated into a longer tour; and Alpine destinations such as St. Moritz may form part of a carefully prepared multi-day route. In winter, tyres, equipment and road conditions must be verified before departure.
A
luxury car rental in Italy allows travellers to experience Como as more than a single destination. The day might begin with breakfast beside the lake, continue by boat to a villa garden and end behind the wheel on the road towards Milan or Switzerland. The most successful Lake Como journeys do not depend on using the car at every moment. They depend on having the right mobility for each part of the story.

What to see in Como and around
Begin in Piazza Duomo, the architectural heart of Como. The Cathedral combines several periods and styles, while the neighbouring Broletto recalls the civic history of the city. From here, the narrow streets of the Città Murata invite an unhurried walk through boutiques, cafés and buildings that reveal Como’s position between Lombardy and the Alps.
Piazza Cavour provides the natural transition from the historic centre to the lake. Continue along the waterfront towards the Tempio Voltiano, dedicated to Como-born scientist Alessandro Volta, and then through the gardens towards Villa Olmo. The neoclassical villa and its setting introduce the grand-residence culture that becomes increasingly visible around the lake.
Como’s silk tradition is another important part of the city’s identity. Museums, ateliers and specialised shops reveal how textile production connected the region with international fashion and design. It offers a meaningful alternative to the familiar lake panoramas and makes Como particularly relevant for travellers interested in craftsmanship and luxury manufacturing.
For a panoramic view, take the funicular from Como to Brunate. From the hillside, rooftops, water and surrounding mountains form one of the finest perspectives over the southern lake. Weather can change the visibility significantly, so a clear morning is often preferable. The funicular also removes the need to navigate and park on the steeper residential roads above the city.
Cernobbio is the first essential excursion beyond Como. Its waterfront, villas and prestigious hotels make it suitable for lunch, an evening aperitivo or a longer stay. Continuing along the western shore reveals Moltrasio and Argegno before reaching the central lake. Travel slowly and allow extra time: the road is part of the atmosphere, but traffic can interrupt even the best-planned schedule.
Tremezzo and Lenno combine exceptional gardens and villa architecture. Villa Carlotta is celebrated for its art and botanical collections, while Villa del Balbianello occupies one of the lake’s most dramatic settings. Access arrangements, tickets and event closures should be checked in advance. For some visits, arriving by boat is more convenient and more memorable than driving directly.
Bellagio deserves several hours rather than a short photograph. Its lanes, gardens and position between the lake’s branches create a naturally romantic setting. Varenna offers a quieter counterpart across the water, while Menaggio can function as a practical base for exploring the central and northern lake.
With a luxury rental car in Como, travellers can continue towards Lugano, Milan or the Alpine roads. Yet Lake Como is a destination where the boat is often as important as the car. A carefully designed itinerary may involve driving to a secure hotel garage, crossing the lake by ferry, returning by water taxi and collecting the vehicle the following morning. Luxury here is not constant movement; it is the absence of unnecessary effort.

Driving in Como: Parking, ZTL and Local Tips
Driving in Como is convenient for airport transfers, villa stays and journeys around the region, but the historic centre and lakeside villages require attention. Como’s ZTL includes the Città Murata and additional central areas, with electronic control at designated entrances. Inside the restricted zone are pedestrian areas with even tighter access rules.
Does Como have a ZTL?
Yes. The ZTL covers the Città Murata as well as areas around Piazza Roma, Piazza Verdi, Piazza Volta and nearby streets. Access is limited throughout the year and monitored electronically. Separate pedestrian areas around the Duomo and other central streets impose additional restrictions, even on some vehicles that may otherwise hold a ZTL permit.
Can hotel guests enter the ZTL?
Customers of accommodation inside the restricted zone are included among the categories for which an access procedure exists. Contact the hotel before arrival, provide the correct registration plate and request the authorised route and parking instructions. A hotel reservation alone should not be treated as automatic permission to enter every restricted street.
Where should I park in Como?
Como has several structured car parks and garages serving the centre, including facilities around Centro Lago, Valduce and Via Auguadri. Availability, opening hours and dimensions should be confirmed before arrival. The municipality’s Como Rapid Parking service provides live guidance for participating car parks around the perimeter of the walled city.
Is street parking suitable for a luxury car?
A secure hotel garage or supervised facility is generally preferable. Central street spaces can be limited and may be subject to resident, payment or time restrictions. Before using any garage with a supercar or large SUV, confirm entrance width, ramp angle, height clearance and whether keys must be left with the operator.
Is it easy to drive around Lake Como?
The scenery is exceptional, but many lakeside roads are narrow and pass directly through villages. Buses, cyclists, delivery vehicles and oncoming traffic can require patience. Distances that appear short on a map may take much longer during weekends, summer and wedding season.
Can I take the rental car on a Lake Como ferry?
Vehicle transport is available only between ferry terminals specifically marked as “Traghetto”. The principal central-lake car-ferry network connects Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio. Timetables change by season, loading can be limited and queues occur during summer and holidays, so check the official schedule before travelling.
Should I drive to Bellagio?
It is possible, but not always necessary. The roads approaching Bellagio can be narrow and congested, while parking is limited in busy periods. Depending on the hotel and route, parking in Como, Cadenabbia, Menaggio or Varenna and continuing by boat may provide a calmer experience.
Is a supercar practical on Lake Como?
Only with careful planning. A Porsche or compact grand tourer can work well, but very wide or extremely low cars may be uncomfortable in villages, old garages and tight passing points. Supercars are better for selected itineraries between Milan, Como and wider regional roads than for repeatedly navigating every narrow lakeside lane.
What changes during winter?
Rain, low temperatures, fog and snow on higher roads can affect the itinerary. An all-wheel-drive SUV or grand tourer is generally more suitable than a rear-wheel-drive supercar. Verify winter tyres, legally required equipment, mountain-pass conditions and hotel access before travelling towards Alpine destinations.
Can I drive from Como into Switzerland?
Only when cross-border travel has been authorised for the rental. Confirm insurance, required documents, mileage conditions and any applicable Swiss motorway vignette before departure. Border rules and rental restrictions can change, so the journey should be declared during booking rather than decided after delivery.
Can Exinoir deliver to an airport, hotel or private villa?
Delivery and collection may be arranged at Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, selected hotels, villas, marinas and other agreed addresses around Lake Como. Narrow private roads, gated properties and waterside locations may require a dedicated meeting point. Share the complete address and luggage requirements in advance.

Choosing the Right Luxury Car for Como
Lake Como rewards elegance, but it also rewards restraint. The right car depends on whether the journey is built around a city hotel, a wedding, a private villa, a summer road trip or a winter continuation into the Alps.
For arrivals from Milan Malpensa, weddings and movements between luxury hotels, a chauffeur-driven Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the most natural choice. It provides privacy for couples and business travellers, space for formal clothing and relief from parking or ZTL procedures. For wine dinners, ceremonies and evening events, a chauffeur also removes the need to nominate a driver.
During spring and early autumn, a Bentley Continental GTC fits Lake Como exceptionally well. It combines open-air romance with the comfort expected on the motorway from Milan and the presence required at a grand hotel. Compared with an uncompromising supercar, it is better suited to relaxed touring, although its width still demands care in the narrowest villages.
A Porsche 911 Cabriolet is the more agile choice for couples travelling with light luggage. Its dimensions are manageable by sports-car standards, and it brings genuine driving pleasure to carefully selected routes beyond the busiest centres. It is particularly suitable for combining Como with Milan, Brianza or a longer journey towards Lake Maggiore.
For extended European touring, the Bentley Continental GT or Aston Martin works as a true grand tourer. These cars suit an itinerary connecting Milan, Como, Lugano and perhaps the Alps, offering greater comfort and luggage practicality than a mid-engine exotic. Cross-border authorisation must be arranged before delivery.
Families staying in hillside villas need a different vehicle. A Range Rover Sport or BMW X7 provides luggage capacity, rear-seat comfort and all-weather confidence. The Range Rover Sport is usually the more manageable option on narrow roads, while the larger BMW X7 makes sense when passenger and luggage space take priority and the villa has suitable access and parking.
Winter changes the hierarchy completely. An all-wheel-drive premium SUV becomes the first recommendation for properties above the lake or itineraries continuing towards mountain resorts. Winter equipment, tyres and local weather matter more than dramatic styling. A supercar should only be considered when conditions, parking and the entire route are appropriate.
Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren models can create an unforgettable arrival for a private event, but they are not the universal answer for Lake Como. Their width, visibility, low ground clearance and limited luggage capacity reduce practicality on the narrowest lakeside sections. They are best reserved for special occasions, controlled logistics and routes that include more open roads outside the central villages.
Como is also a destination where one booking may benefit from two different solutions: chauffeur service for airport arrival, wedding or villa transfers, followed by a cabriolet delivered for private exploration. Exinoir can coordinate the vehicle around hotels, boats and the seasonal character of the lake. Here, luxury is not measured by using the most conspicuous car. It is measured by choosing the car that makes the landscape feel effortless.
