What to see in Paris and around
Driving in Paris: Parking, ZTL and Local Tips
It is possible, but it is not always the fastest way to move between nearby attractions. Dense traffic, bus and cycle lanes, one-way systems, pedestrian areas and limited stopping space require concentration. The most comfortable strategy is often to use the car for airport transfers, appointments, evening destinations and journeys outside Paris, then park securely and explore each central neighbourhood on foot. Does Paris have a low-emission zone?
Yes. Paris forms part of the Métropole du Grand Paris Low Emission Zone, known as the ZFE. Since 1 January 2025, restrictions have extended to vehicles classified Crit’Air 3, Crit’Air 4, Crit’Air 5 and unclassified vehicles. The exact operating conditions, exemptions and enforcement arrangements can change, so they must be checked before every journey. A recent premium rental vehicle will normally have a more favourable classification, but compliance and the required Crit’Air identification should still be confirmed, particularly for vehicles entering France from another country. Do foreign-registered vehicles need a Crit’Air sticker?
Foreign vehicles are also subject to French low-emission requirements where applicable. Do not assume that a foreign registration automatically creates an exemption. When planning a cross-border rental or bringing a vehicle into Paris, confirm the classification, sticker and current access conditions in advance. Where should I park a luxury car in Paris?
Secure underground parking or private hotel parking is generally preferable to long surface stays. Paris operates numerous underground facilities across the central arrondissements, and the city itself notes that underground parking can be more economical than street parking for stays longer than approximately two hours. Confirm the entrance width, ramp angle, maximum height and security arrangements before arriving with a low supercar, long-wheelbase saloon or large SUV. Can visitors park on the street?
Yes, where authorised and after paying the applicable visitor tariff, but stays on the same space are limited and availability can be poor. Surface pricing varies by zone and heavier vehicles may be subject to higher visitor tariffs. Check the signage and payment method at the exact location rather than relying on information saved from a previous visit. Never leave the vehicle in delivery bays, cycle lanes, taxi spaces or temporary no-parking areas. Are there pedestrian or restricted areas?
Yes. Paris continues to expand pedestrian and limited-access areas, particularly in historic and highly visited districts. Access rules can also change for events, security operations, construction and local traffic plans. Barriers, illuminated signs and street markings always take priority over navigation instructions. Hotel guests should ask the property to explain the correct vehicle entrance before arrival. What should I know about the Boulevard Périphérique?
The périphérique has a general speed limit of 50 km/h. A reserved lane can be activated for car-sharing vehicles carrying at least two people, public transport, taxis and other authorised users. When the lane is active, solo drivers must not use it. Follow overhead signs and current road information, as operating conditions and temporary closures may change. When is Paris traffic busiest?
Weekday commuting periods, Friday evenings, major exhibitions, Fashion Week and large sporting or cultural events can create considerable delays. Airport transfers should always include additional time, particularly when crossing the city or using the périphérique. Rain and roadworks can also change journey times rapidly. Is Paris suitable for a supercar?
A supercar can create an unforgettable arrival, but it requires careful route and parking selection. Low ground clearance, steep garage ramps, narrow entrances, cobbled streets and speed-control features can be problematic. Reserve secure parking in advance and avoid using a supercar as casual transport between closely spaced central attractions. Which road trips can begin in Paris?
Versailles, Chantilly and Fontainebleau are suitable for day trips. Champagne works well for a longer day or overnight stay, while Normandy, Burgundy and the Loire Valley deserve several days. Cross-border routes towards Brussels, Luxembourg or Switzerland may also be possible, subject to the rental agreement, insurance, mileage and one-way conditions.
