Salzburg travel guide

Local insights, practical information & inspiration.

Salzburg appears almost composed like a piece of music. Baroque domes rise above narrow streets, the Salzach River reflects the surrounding mountains, and Hohensalzburg Fortress watches over the city from its dramatic position above the historic centre. Elegant but intimate, Salzburg offers the cultural richness of a European capital within a destination that remains easy to experience over a weekend or as part of a longer Austrian journey.

Known throughout the world as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the city has built its identity around music, architecture and refined hospitality. Concert halls, historic residences and traditional cafés preserve Salzburg’s classical character, while luxury hotels, sophisticated restaurants and international events give the city a distinctly contemporary appeal.

The UNESCO-listed Old Town is arranged around graceful squares, hidden courtyards and streets lined with ornate iron signs. Getreidegasse leads past Mozart’s Birthplace and towards some of Salzburg’s most elegant shops, while Residenzplatz, Mozartplatz and Kapitelplatz reveal the monumental side of the historic centre.

Salzburg is especially romantic during the evening, when the façades are softly illuminated and the fortress appears above the rooftops. In winter, Christmas markets, snow-covered mountains and warm traditional interiors create a more intimate atmosphere. Spring and summer bring outdoor concerts, garden walks and scenic drives through the surrounding lake district.

A luxury car rental in Salzburg is most valuable when the journey extends beyond the pedestrian Old Town. It allows guests to travel comfortably between Salzburg Airport, luxury hotels, Alpine resorts and the lakes of the Salzkammergut. The city is also positioned perfectly for road trips towards Hallstatt, Wolfgangsee, Berchtesgaden, Kitzbühel, Zell am See, Munich and Innsbruck.

For couples, Salzburg can become the beginning of a romantic Alpine escape. Families can combine the historic centre with Hellbrunn Palace, mountain cable cars, salt mines and lakeside villages. Business travellers benefit from discreet airport delivery and the ability to continue directly towards conference venues, private chalets or neighbouring European cities.

Exinoir can arrange vehicle delivery to Salzburg Airport, selected hotels, private residences and other agreed locations. Guests planning a longer itinerary can also explore our selection for luxury car rental in Austria, with vehicles suited to city travel, mountain roads, winter resorts and international European journeys.

What to see in Salzburg and around

What should you see during your first visit to Salzburg?

Begin with the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the unmistakable landmark above the city. Its elevated position provides an extraordinary panorama across the Old Town, Salzach River and surrounding mountains. The fortress can be reached by funicular or on foot, and its courtyards, historic rooms and viewpoints deserve sufficient time.

Below the fortress lies Salzburg’s Baroque heart. Salzburg Cathedral dominates Domplatz with its pale façade and monumental dome, while the nearby Residenz, Kapitelplatz and St. Peter’s Abbey form one of the most beautiful historic ensembles in Austria.

Continue towards Getreidegasse, Salzburg’s best-known shopping street. Its narrow proportions, decorated façades, internal courtyards and traditional metal signs create a particularly distinctive atmosphere. At number 9 stands Mozart’s Birthplace, where the composer was born in 1756.

Mozart’s Birthplace and the Mozart Residence on Makartplatz present different chapters of the composer’s life. Even travellers who are not devoted to classical music will find that Mozart’s presence provides an essential thread connecting the architecture, history and cultural identity of Salzburg.

Across the river, the Mirabell Palace and Gardens offer one of the city’s most elegant perspectives. The formal garden frames a celebrated view towards the fortress, while fountains, sculptures and geometric flowerbeds create a beautiful setting for an unhurried walk. The Marble Hall inside the palace is also renowned as a concert and wedding venue.

For a quieter side of Salzburg, walk along the Salzach River or explore the streets around Steingasse and the Mönchsberg. The elevated paths above the centre provide panoramic views without the crowds found around the principal squares.

Hellbrunn Palace is a rewarding destination outside the historic centre. Built as a pleasure palace, it is known for its gardens and playful trick fountains. Its location makes it easy to combine with Salzburg Zoo or a journey towards the Untersberg mountain.

The Untersberg offers a dramatic contrast to the city’s architecture. A cable car leads towards high Alpine scenery and wide views across Salzburg, Bavaria and the lake district. Weather conditions should always be checked before travelling into elevated mountain areas.

Salzburg is also an important destination for music and international culture. Depending on the season, visitors can attend classical performances, intimate chamber concerts and events associated with the Salzburg Festival. Reserving premium performances, restaurants and accommodation in advance is strongly recommended during major events.

Driving in Salzburg: Parking, ZTL and Local Tips

Is Salzburg easy to explore by car?

A car is extremely useful for reaching Salzburg, travelling from the airport and exploring the surrounding lakes, mountains and resorts. However, the historic Old Town itself is compact, highly pedestrianised and subject to restricted vehicle access. The best approach is normally to leave the vehicle at a hotel, private garage or authorised parking facility and explore the centre on foot.

Can I drive into Salzburg Old Town?

Since 1 July 2026, regular access to Salzburg’s Old Town has been largely restricted. The central area uses controlled access points and bollards, and entry is primarily reserved for authorised vehicles, residents and certain hotel guests.

If your hotel is located inside the restricted area, contact the property before arrival. Guests with a confirmed reservation may be allowed to access the hotel, but the precise route and entry procedure must be provided by the accommodation. Do not attempt to follow another vehicle through a controlled access point.

Where should I park in Salzburg?

Secure underground garages are generally the most comfortable solution for guests staying near the centre. Parking facilities around Mönchsberg, Mirabell, Linzer Gasse and other central areas provide access to the Old Town without requiring drivers to enter its most restricted streets.

Salzburg also operates Park & Ride facilities connected to the centre by public transport. These are particularly useful during the Salzburg Festival, Christmas-market season and other periods when central traffic and parking demand increase substantially.

Drivers of sports cars and supercars should check garage dimensions, ramp gradients and maximum vehicle height in advance. Low front splitters and wide bodywork can require particular care in older underground facilities.

How does street parking work in Salzburg?

Salzburg has short-term parking zones indicated by signs at the entrances and exits of the regulated area. Standard restrictions generally apply from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 19:00, when parking fees are charged. On Saturday, regulations generally apply between 09:00 and 16:00; parking may be free, but a parking disc is required. The usual maximum stay is three hours.

Local signage always takes priority. Restrictions, prices and permitted durations may vary according to the exact street, special event or temporary traffic arrangement.

Do I need an Austrian motorway vignette?

A valid vignette is required on most Austrian motorways and expressways for passenger vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes. Certain Alpine routes, tunnels and mountain motorway sections may require an additional section toll.

Before beginning the journey, confirm whether the rental vehicle already has a valid Austrian vignette and whether the planned route includes separately tolled sections. This is particularly relevant when travelling towards Innsbruck, Carinthia or more distant Alpine destinations.

What should I know about winter driving around Salzburg?

Between 1 November and 15 April, vehicles must be fitted with winter tyres on all wheels whenever snow, slush or ice creates wintry road conditions. Conditions can change quickly outside Salzburg, especially on roads leading towards ski resorts and higher mountain passes.

Tell Exinoir if your itinerary includes Kitzbühel, Zell am See, Saalbach, Obertauern or another Alpine resort. The vehicle and equipment must be appropriate for the destination, season and anticipated road conditions. Some mountain routes may also require snow chains when indicated by local signs.

Can the car be delivered to Salzburg Airport?

Delivery and collection may be arranged at Salzburg Airport, selected hotels, private residences or another agreed address. Providing the flight number and expected arrival time helps coordinate the handover, particularly during the winter season and major cultural events.

Can I drive from Salzburg into Germany?

Salzburg is situated close to the German border, making destinations such as Berchtesgaden, Lake Königssee, Chiemsee and Munich natural additions to the itinerary. Any international or cross-border journey must be declared and approved before the rental begins, as insurance, mileage and territorial conditions may vary.

What are the best road trips from Salzburg?

The Salzkammergut lake district is one of the most beautiful driving areas near the city. Routes towards Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee, St. Gilgen and Hallstatt combine lakeside scenery, mountain panoramas and elegant hotels. During summer, a convertible or grand tourer brings an additional sense of freedom to these roads.

Drivers looking for an Alpine journey can continue towards Zell am See, Kaprun, Kitzbühel or the Grossglockner region. Some scenic mountain roads operate seasonally and may close because of snow or weather conditions, so the route should always be checked shortly before departure.

For a longer European itinerary, Salzburg connects naturally with Vienna, Innsbruck, Munich, Zurich, Prague and the northern Italian Alps. The city therefore works particularly well as a midpoint between culture, nature and luxury resort travel.

Choosing the Right Luxury Car for Salzburg

The best vehicle for Salzburg depends heavily on the season and planned itinerary. A car used mainly for elegant hotel arrivals and cultural events has different requirements from one intended for winter resorts, mountain roads or family travel.

Luxury SUVs are the most versatile choice for Salzburg throughout the year. Models such as the Range Rover, Mercedes-AMG G63, BMW X7 or Bentley Bentayga provide generous luggage capacity, elevated comfort and greater confidence when the route continues towards Alpine destinations. They are particularly suitable for families, ski holidays and travellers carrying substantial luggage.

Executive saloons such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class are ideal for business journeys, airport transfers, the Salzburg Festival and evenings at prestigious hotels or concert venues. Their quiet cabins and discreet appearance complement the sophisticated character of the city.

Grand tourers offer an excellent balance between performance and comfort for journeys through the Salzkammergut, Bavaria and the Austrian Alps. They are suitable for couples who want an emotional driving experience without sacrificing luggage space or long-distance refinement.

Convertibles are especially rewarding from late spring to early autumn. Driving with the roof open beside Wolfgangsee, through lakeside villages or towards the foothills of the Alps transforms the journey into one of the most memorable parts of the holiday.

Supercars can be selected for special events, celebrations and performance-focused road trips. Their low ground clearance and limited luggage capacity make them less practical for winter resorts or central garages, but they can be exceptional on carefully planned routes during favourable weather.

For larger families, groups or journeys involving ski equipment and multiple suitcases, a luxury van rental can offer greater comfort and practicality while keeping everyone together.

Exinoir can help match the vehicle to the season, number of passengers, luggage requirements and complete itinerary, ensuring that the car feels appropriate not only for Salzburg, but for every destination that follows.
