Venice travel guide

Local insights, practical information & inspiration.

Venice is unlike any other destination in Europe. Built across a lagoon and shaped by centuries of art, commerce and maritime history, the city replaces conventional streets with canals, bridges and narrow pedestrian passages. Palaces appear to rise directly from the water, church façades reflect the changing light, and even a short walk can reveal quiet courtyards hidden only minutes from the busiest landmarks.

The historic centre of Venice is entirely car-free. Travellers arriving by road cross the Ponte della Libertà and leave their vehicle at Piazzale Roma or on Tronchetto Island before continuing on foot, by vaporetto or by private water taxi. This makes Venice different from most luxury car rental destinations: the vehicle is not used for sightseeing inside the city, but it can transform everything surrounding the stay.

A luxury car rental in Venice is particularly valuable for airport delivery, business travel on the mainland, stays in private villas and journeys continuing through Veneto or northern Italy. From Venice, it is possible to reach the historic villas of the Riviera del Brenta, the Prosecco Hills, Padua, Treviso, Verona, Lake Garda and the Dolomites. The car provides the freedom to combine several very different destinations without depending on fixed transfers or public transport schedules.

Venice itself should be explored slowly. The principal landmarks can be visited in a day, but the character of the city becomes more apparent during a longer stay. Early mornings reveal quiet canals before the arrival of daily visitors, while evenings create a softer and more intimate atmosphere after many of the busiest streets begin to empty.

Each district has its own personality. San Marco is monumental and theatrical, Dorsoduro feels artistic and residential, Cannaregio preserves a quieter local rhythm, and Castello stretches from famous waterfront views into less visited neighbourhoods. Santa Croce and San Polo bring together traditional markets, workshops and some of the city’s most atmospheric streets.

Venice is romantic without needing to be staged. A private water taxi arriving at a historic hotel, an evening walk beside an almost silent canal or dinner overlooking the lagoon can feel more memorable than a carefully planned attraction. For couples celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon or proposal, the city naturally creates moments that feel private even within one of Europe’s most famous destinations.

The seasons change the experience considerably. Spring and early autumn usually offer comfortable temperatures for walking and exploring the wider Veneto region. Summer brings longer evenings and the possibility of combining Venice with the Adriatic coast or the Dolomites, although the city can become particularly busy. Winter is quieter and more atmospheric, with mist, reflections and a sense of intimacy that suits Venice especially well.

When planning the journey, consider the complete itinerary rather than Venice alone. A client spending several nights exclusively in the historic centre may only require airport delivery and secure parking. A traveller continuing towards Verona, Lake Garda, the Alps or another Italian city will benefit much more from having a private vehicle available.

Exinoir can arrange a tailored luxury car rental in Italy with delivery at Venice Marco Polo Airport, selected hotels, private addresses and other agreed locations. Availability and logistics depend on the specific model, travel dates and chosen itinerary.

What to see in Venice and around

For a first visit to Venice, Piazza San Marco is the natural starting point. The square brings together St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Campanile and the arcades of the Procuratie. Arriving early in the morning makes it easier to appreciate the architecture before the busiest part of the day.

St Mark’s Basilica reflects Venice’s historic relationship with the eastern Mediterranean through its domes, mosaics and richly decorated interior. Nearby, the Doge’s Palace reveals the political and ceremonial heart of the former Venetian Republic. Its grand rooms, courtyards and passage across the Bridge of Sighs provide a deeper understanding of the city beyond its romantic image.

From San Marco, walk towards the Riva degli Schiavoni for views across the lagoon, or take a vaporetto towards San Giorgio Maggiore. The island and its bell tower offer a different perspective over the city, St Mark’s Basin and the surrounding lagoon.

The Grand Canal is Venice’s principal waterway and one of its greatest architectural experiences. Travelling along it by vaporetto or private water taxi reveals palaces from different periods, historic hotels and the façades of buildings designed to be seen from the water. The Rialto Bridge remains its most recognisable crossing.

Near Rialto, the market area introduces a more commercial and traditional side of Venice. Continue into San Polo to discover churches, small squares and streets that feel less formal than those surrounding San Marco. The Basilica dei Frari contains important artworks and monumental tombs, while the nearby Scuola Grande di San Rocco is celebrated for its extraordinary cycle of paintings by Tintoretto.

Dorsoduro is ideal for travellers interested in art and a more relaxed atmosphere. The Gallerie dell’Accademia hold one of the most important collections of Venetian painting, while the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents modern art inside the unfinished Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. The walk along the Zattere is especially pleasant in the late afternoon.

At the eastern end of Dorsoduro, Punta della Dogana creates one of Venice’s most elegant viewpoints, where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal. The nearby Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute is one of the defining elements of the Venetian skyline.

Cannaregio offers a quieter itinerary through residential streets, canals and traditional restaurants. The historic Jewish Ghetto is located here, as are several important synagogues and museums. Walking beyond the principal route between the railway station and Rialto reveals a more intimate side of the city.

Castello begins close to San Marco but gradually becomes calmer towards the Arsenale and the gardens of the Biennale. The district is particularly relevant during the Venice Biennale of Art or Architecture, although its waterfront walks, churches and local neighbourhoods are worth exploring at any time.

No Venice itinerary is complete without considering the lagoon islands. Murano is internationally known for glassmaking, Burano for its colourful houses and lace tradition, and Torcello for its quieter atmosphere and early Venetian history. These islands can be visited by public water transport or private boat.

The Lido offers beaches, Art Nouveau architecture and a more open, residential character. It becomes particularly important during the Venice Film Festival and can provide a quieter base during the summer season.

Outside the lagoon, a luxury rental car creates several possibilities. The Riviera del Brenta follows the Brenta Canal between Venice and Padua and is known for historic villas associated with Venetian noble families. Padua itself offers the Scrovegni Chapel, medieval streets, arcaded squares and one of Italy’s oldest universities.

North of Venice, Treviso is an elegant and less crowded city crossed by canals and surrounded by countryside. Continue towards the Prosecco Hills around Conegliano and Valdobbiadene for vineyards, panoramic roads and refined rural hospitality. Wine tastings should always be combined with a professional driver or another safe transport arrangement.

Longer itineraries can connect Venice with Verona, Lake Garda and the Dolomites. Verona offers Roman architecture, historic squares and a romantic identity of its own. Lake Garda combines waterfront resorts and scenic roads, while the Dolomites introduce an entirely different landscape of mountain passes, Alpine hotels and seasonal outdoor experiences.

Venice can also form part of a wider journey through northern Italy, continuing towards Bologna, Florence or Milan. The ideal route depends on the season, rental duration and type of vehicle selected.

Driving in Venice: Parking, ZTL and Local Tips

Driving in Venice requires a different approach from driving in Rome, Milan or Florence. The historic city has no roads for conventional vehicles. Cars reach Venice across the Ponte della Libertà and must stop at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto Island. From there, passengers continue on foot, by vaporetto, People Mover or private water taxi.

The car remains useful for Venice Marco Polo Airport, hotels on the mainland, business appointments in Mestre and journeys through Veneto. Careful planning is nevertheless important, particularly when travelling in a large SUV, long luxury saloon or low supercar.

Can I drive into the historic centre of Venice?

No. The historic centre is composed of pedestrian streets, bridges and canals and cannot be entered by car. Piazzale Roma represents the final road terminal closest to the historic city. Tronchetto provides another major parking area before Piazzale Roma.

A hotel reservation inside Venice does not provide road access to the hotel. Before arrival, ask the property how luggage and passengers should continue from Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto or the airport. Many luxury hotels can help arrange a private water taxi or porter service.

Where should I park when visiting Venice?

The two principal choices are Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto Island. Piazzale Roma provides immediate access to pedestrian routes and ACTV waterbus stops. Parking options include the municipal Autorimessa Comunale and other privately operated garages.

Tronchetto offers large covered parking facilities and connections towards the historic centre by vaporetto and People Mover. It may be a practical alternative when garages at Piazzale Roma are busy or when the dimensions of the vehicle require additional consideration.

Parking tariffs, reservation conditions and availability can change. During weekends, holidays and major events, advance booking is strongly recommended.

Which parking option is safest for a luxury or supercar?

A professionally managed indoor garage is generally preferable. Before booking, confirm the maximum vehicle height and width, the entrance layout, ramp angle and whether the keys must be left with the garage operator.

These details are important for wide SUVs, long-wheelbase saloons and low sports cars. If the car has a front-axle lift system, activate it before steep ramps or changes in surface level.

Remove luggage, shopping bags, documents and valuable items from the passenger compartment before leaving the vehicle. If your hotel offers valet parking, confirm where the car will be stored and whether the service is authorised and insured to move it.

Does Venice have a ZTL?

The historic lagoon city does not function like a conventional ZTL because cars cannot circulate through it at all. On the mainland, however, central Mestre has camera-controlled Limited Traffic Zones. Access is reserved for authorised vehicles and should not be assumed to be included with a standard rental car.

Always observe signs before entering central Mestre or other restricted roads. Navigation applications can assist with general routing but should not be treated as definitive confirmation that a street is accessible.

What is the Venice Access Fee?

Venice may operate an Access Fee for visitors entering the historic city on selected dates and during specified hours. Prices, dates, exemptions and registration requirements can change from one season to another.

Travellers staying overnight in qualifying accommodation, residents and other categories may be exempt from payment but can still be required to obtain or demonstrate an exemption. Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto and parts of the transport arrival area are treated differently from entry into the historic city itself.

Before visiting, check the official Venice Access Fee portal using the exact date of entry. The parking charge and Venice Access Fee are separate expenses.

Can the car be delivered to Venice Marco Polo Airport?

Vehicle delivery may be arranged at Venice Marco Polo Airport, subject to availability and logistical conditions. The meeting point, delivery time, identification procedure and flight information should be confirmed in advance.

Delivery may also be possible at Treviso Airport, hotels in Mestre, private villas and other agreed locations in Veneto. Logistics costs depend on the location of the specific vehicle and the planned itinerary.

Should I collect the car before or after visiting Venice?

If the entire first part of the stay takes place inside the historic centre, it may be more practical to collect the car when leaving Venice. This avoids paying for several days of parking while the vehicle remains unused.

If the itinerary includes an airport arrival followed by destinations on the mainland, business meetings or an immediate journey towards the Dolomites, Verona or another city, collecting the vehicle on arrival may be preferable.

The best arrangement depends on the complete itinerary. Exinoir can help coordinate delivery so that the rental begins when the car becomes genuinely useful.

Is it better to stay in Venice or Mestre when travelling by car?

Staying in the historic centre provides the most atmospheric Venetian experience but requires leaving the vehicle at a terminal garage. Hotels in Mestre and on the mainland may offer easier parking and road access, making them practical for business travel or itineraries involving daily journeys outside Venice.

A combined stay is also possible: spend several nights in historic Venice without using the car, then collect the vehicle for the next stage of the journey.

When is traffic busiest?

The Ponte della Libertà, Piazzale Roma and routes surrounding Mestre can become congested during weekday commuting hours, holiday weekends, summer arrivals and major events. Allow additional time when returning a vehicle before a flight or fixed train connection.

Choosing the Right Luxury Car for Venice

A luxury van is suitable for larger groups, families carrying substantial luggage, event teams and passengers requiring comfortable airport or hotel transfers. It can be particularly useful when coordinating several people with a private water-taxi arrival or departure.

Before selecting your vehicle, consider where it will be parked during your stay in Venice, whether the selected garage accepts its dimensions, how many suitcases must be carried and which destinations you plan to visit after leaving the lagoon. A beautiful car should complement the itinerary rather than complicate it.

Exinoir can arrange luxury car rental in Venice for airport delivery, romantic journeys, family holidays, business visits and longer European itineraries. Send us your travel dates, number of passengers, luggage requirements, preferred vehicle and planned destinations to receive a tailored selection.
